The Toyota Prius is the best selling hybrid car in the world and Toyota began selling this hybrid car in India, as a reaffirmation towards Toyota’s commitment to cleaner automotive technologies. Though the Prius is slow seller primarily because of its high price as the car is imported directly into India, that Indians have an option of buying a hybrid car in itself is something quite creditworthy as electric and hybrid cars are yet to gain traction at the Indian car market.

Earlier this year at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Toyota showed off a minor facelift for the Prius, which has begun selling in international markets. Now, Toyota Kirloskar India will officially launch the updated Prius, at the upcoming 2012 Indian Auto Expo. The upgraded Prius is more of a cosmetic job than an upgrade under the skin. The facelifted Toyota Prius gets new headlamps and tail lamps while the redesigned front bumper now gets LED daytime running lamps. The Prius’ wing mirrors get power assist while the 15 inch alloy wheels see a design change. On the insides too, the Prius sees a host of changes. The grey color of the interiors are now replaced by black along with silver inserts to break the monotony. The Prius also gets new fabric for the seats and a brand new audio-infotainment system.

The 2012 Toyota Prius Hybrid will continue to be powered by the same petrol-electric engine combination for propulsion. The petrol engine is a 1.8 liter-98 Bhp unit that runs on the Atkinson cycle. This engine is allied to a an electric motor that produces another 36 horsepower to take up the net power to 134 Bhp. The Toyota Prius Hybrid can deliver around 21 Kmpl in the real world with this combination, which quite definitely is higher than most if not all petrol cars, and this is one of the key selling points of this hybrid car.
