The next generation Porsche Boxster is due for launch

The next generation Porsche Boxster is due for launch in 2016 but the test mules of the car are already being spotted around where Porsche is known to test their latest cars, the Nurburgring. The Boxster as well as the Cayman were scooped by the Car Magazine recently. Both the cars are being developed as Porsche prepares the all new models for launch.

This is just the third time in the history of the brand that the whole range of cars will undergo a change from the basic Boxster convertible to the top-of-the-line 911 Carrera S. With more and more cars being sighted the round of speculations about the power trains are already on in the media. According to the Car Magazine, the 2016 Porsche Boxster will dump its current 6- cylinder engine for a much smaller 4- pot with two turbochargers. A big bore 2.5 litre, flat-4 is what could replace the the present 3.4 litre, flat-6 that puts out 350 bhp.
Porsche will also introduce hybrid powertrains later in the lifecycle of the new cars and that has been the reason for the longer wheelbase platforms that have been adopted for the next generation of sports cars from Porsche. The new Porsche Boxster is slightly longer than its predecessor with a 60 mm longer wheelbase. The new car is lighter than the old model and thus could be more agile as a result. The hard top version of the Porsche Boxster, the Cayman could also get a turbocharged engine about a year later.
Porsche could also launch a new car on the lines of the old 356 called the Speedster with a much smaller 1.6 litre engine. There has been a recent wave of smaller, fuel efficient engines in the high performance cars. Most auto makers are now opting for smaller capacity turbocharged engines to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions. This comes as the world prepares for more stringent emissions norms.
