Bangalorean Sheeja first woman Harley Davidson rider in India

Joining a growing breed of women riders in the country, Bangalorean Sheeja Mathews, a Human Resources Professional by vocation, has become the first woman Harley Davidson rider in India. Sheeja, who just took delivery of a spanking Harley Davidson Iron 883 from Tusker Harley Davidson at Bangalore, becomes the first Indian woman to officially own the iconic American motorcycle, which incidentally is ridden by a large number of women in the United States.

In fact, the Sportsster 883 range of motorcycles are even known as motorcycles apt for woman riders due to the lower weight and size than other Harley Davidson motorcycles. We’ve been witnessing quite a few women getting onto the leisure motorcycling bandwagon, joining their husbands and partners on Harley Davidson India’s numerous road trips regularly organized by it’s dealers.
By the looks of it, the safety offered while riding in a group and the sheer sense of freedom and liberation a motorcycle on an open road offers, seems to be the biggest driving factor behind women taking to motorcycling as a leisure. Harley Davidson, being an iconic lifestyle brand whose very identity revolves around leisure motorcycling has been doing it’s bit to encourage motorcycle touring in the country by organizing road trips through it’s dealerships.

Meanwhile, here’s what Sheeja has had to say about her foray into the world of motorcycles.
Though there are other superbikes available in India, I always dreamed of owning what I firmly believe is the ultimate superbike, a Harley-Davidson. Well, I have been riding my husband’s bike for the past 10 years and I thought it was high time I upgraded. I didn’t know that I was the first woman to buy a Harley Davidson in India till the company people told me. I thought of upgrading to a Harley when they opened a showroom here. Due to heavy traffic in the city, I intend to take the Harley to office only once a week. I will mainly use it for long weekend cruise trips. Oh, he wants me to drop him to school on the bike so that he could show off his mother’s bike to his friends. I do drive a (Tata) Safari and (Chevrolet) Cruze but I love bikes. People are concerned about the weight of the bike. However, I am no size-zero lady and can comfortably ride the Harley-Davidson. My weight works perfectly for this bike. And, I would be interested in being part of these rides.
The Harley Davidson Iron 883 is one of the least priced Harley Davidson motorcycles in India at INr 6.5 Lakhs, Ex-showroom. The motorcycle was one amongst the two motorcycles Harley Davidson India launched last year which is assembled in India through completely knocked down(CKD) kits. In the future, Harley Davidson plans to launch a low cost made-for-India Harley, which is set to give the iconic American brand massive volumes and market share. This, even as motorcycling as a lifestyle, as opposed to it being a mere form of commuting is quickly becoming a growing trend in India as disposable incomes grow.
