2012 BMW Gran Coupe concept with four-doors and a coupe style roof line

What we like about the top three German auto makers is the cut throat competition that goes on between them. The cold war between Audi, Mercedes-Benz and BMW is so intense that they had to sign a treaty limiting the top speed of their cars to 155 mph or 250 kph. Just imagine if the trio was allowed to compete for supremacy, we could’ve had a road cars who’s speedometers read in mach rather than mph by now. That does sound more fiction that fact although the segment war continues. Mercedes-Benz brought out the CLS which was a four-door coupe after which Audi responded with the A7.

Now, BMW has fielded their contender in this segment. The BMW Gran Coupe is a similar concept with four-doors and a coupe style roof line. The 6-Series has been a 2+2 coupe since its conception. What BMW has done is added a couple doors, a proper rear seat without spoiling the looks of the coupe. The new Gran Coupe is all set to take on the Mercedes-Benz CLS and the Audi A7. The new car is longer than the coupe by 4.4 inches which is enough to liberate ample space for the rear passengers.

The interior too is well appointed with acres of leather and other creature comforts to pamper its occupants. iDrive, rear seat entertainment package etc would also be on offer. Under the bonnet of the base 640i will be a turbocharged 3.0 litre inline-6 cylinder engine with 315 horsepower. The top-of-the-line variant, the 650i will boast a 4.4 litre twin-turbocharged V8 churning out 445 bhp of raw power. The Gran Coupe in its high-end guise will also feature four-wheel drive in the form of BMW’s xDrive. Having said that, the BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe does seem to be a formidable challenger to the mighty CLS and the businessman in the black suite (Audi A7).

Both cars have already been launched in India and the Gran Coupe too will be headed for the Indian market soon after its global debut. Some reports suggest that BMW might launch the new 6-Series Gran Coupe at the Geneva motor show later next year. Also on cars is the new 2012 BMW 3-Series which will be out before the Gran Coupe. This too is coming to India, replacing the old model. The new 3-Series is slated for India debut by mid-2012 debut. Hence, we could expect the Gran Coupe by the end of next year, may be.
